About DVD Disc

DVD stands for Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc. DVD is similar to an ordinary 5-inch Compact Disk in size with a far better capacity of holding a minimum of 4.7GB (Gigabytes), enough for a full-length movie. DVD can support from 4.7GB to 17GB and have an access rate from 600KBPs (Kilobytes per second) to 1.3MBPs. Note that a CD can only hold a capacity from 630MB (Megabytes) to 1GB. This means that the capacity of one DVD is equivalent to 7 CDs on single side alone!

One of the best feature of the DVD-ROM drive is that they are backward compatible with CD-ROMS. This means that DVD players can also play your old CD-ROMS, CD-I Discs, Video and Audio CDs as well as DVD-ROMS.

DVD uses MPEG-2 (Moving Picture Experts Group) to compress the video data. It refers to a type of data compression optimized for video and audio data. By analyzing the changes between video "Frames," an MPEG encoder is able to reduce the file size of the data by a ratio of up to 200 to 1. Which means that MPEG-2 can compress a 2-hr. movie into a few Gigabytes. This remarkably efficient compression method allows full-screen and full-motion video, plus a full CD-quality audio to be stored in a relatively small size file.

DVD picture quality is far better than VHS due to the fact that DVD is fully digital which results to a razor-sharp picture quality, finer and clearer resolution. Thus giving a you an exceptionally smooth video image quality just like watching your favorite movies in a theatre.
